This week we started to evaluate our model of FPS UI's and their relations to player frames. To do this we recruited some fellow gamers among students at the it-university and held one-to-one interviews with them.
These interviews were conducted very casually in what is called a semi-structured fashion.
We had a few topics we wanted to address, but other than that the interviewees were free to wander off topic from time to time. The interviews were recorded and transcribed and interesting quotes were compiled into a document for further analysis.
The results from these interviews looks very promising and seem to strengthen some of our notions of how the relevance of certain information carriers in the UI differ depending on frame(s) and game category. This framework is something that will be very helpful when constructing guidelines.
Other than this we have stumbled upon some interesting research form finland that to some extent deals with the same things we have been thinking about these last few weeks.
Next week we hope to host a focus group (consisting of the people we interviewed) were we all can discuss the ins and outs of FPS UIs. Most of all we want to address the effect of increased amounts of diegetic information carriers and the pros and cons of using Hud elements with spatial components.
