Two finnish researchers proposes a taxonomy of gameplay experience quite similar to the one we are looking at (competition/mimicry/vertigo), in which gameplay experience is divided into the following three components.
Sensory immersion: according to the authors this more or less corresponds to the audiovisual qualities of games.
Challenge-based immersion: the balance of challenges and abilities, striving towards goals and achieving them.
Imaginative immersion: becoming absorbed with the stories and the world, feeling identity for the game characters, etc.
It's easy to draw comparisons to Caillois' game taxonomy of competition, mimicry and vertigo, which we currently feel can be of use as a base for understanding when different HUD approaches are appropriate. However, the authors of this article seem to speek of sensory immersion as the audiovisual qualities of the game, while we speek of sensory-rich experiences beyond that. I still think that this can be of use to us.
