Affordances tied to framing

In the book "Datorspelandets mening", researcher Jonas Linderoth ties Gibsons notion of affordances to Goffmans notion of frames and situated activity systems.

For situated activity systems (social moments in time and space where people meet and interact in a common activity; eat breakfast, travel by bus to work, etc) there are potential resources (participants abilities, cultural tools and material conditions). Depending on these resources, the situated activity system has a set of potential affordances available for the participants to act upon. The character of the activity will vary through establishment of different frameworks, the resources used and the conditions ruling. These frameworks are more or less explicit and common definitions of what is relevant in the situation.

The complexity of the environment means that we must do a selection of affordances to act upon. This is where affordances are tied to frameworks: the frameworks helps participants to select appropriate affordances. Establishment of these frameworks is ruled by both participants, material conditions and cultural tools.

Goffman separates primary frameworks from keys/keying. The former are frameworks not dependent on an original prototypical framework (e.g. an umbrella being unfolded in rainy weather), while the latter are frameworks that are established using another framework as a base (e.g. an umbrella being unfolded on a theatre stage to the soundtrack of thunder).

Since tying notions to each other will be an important part of the literature study, I think this can be of use for us, especially since both affordances and frames are of interest for us. The separation of primary frameworks from keying could also be usable for us.
